The following images are a few of the amazingly beautiful "Fayum Portraits". These encaustic ( wax-based pigments) paintings on panel were done during the Roman occupation of Egypt following it's annexation into the Empire in 30bce. These paintings show the influence of the Roman, Greek and original Egyptian styles of portraiture. We will take a much more involved look at them when we get to the Romans...however -wait until you see the ones at the Metropolitan Museum!!!
